I should be used to it by now, but I guess I'm not. It still surprises me greatly, shocks me a little, and saddens me deeply when Christ and Christmas are not connected. I love the secular aspect of Christmas. I adore Santa Claus and still believe in him. I enjoy the cute little snowmen, especially since I live in the Phoenix area and (thankfully) haven't seen a snow flake since 1998. I like reindeer, Christmas trees, candy canes, and glowing decorations. I don't care for nutcrackers. But these items are not the reason we celebrate Christmas.
Like it or not, Christmas would not exist without the birth of Jesus thousands of years ago. The Christmas story is not a one day event. Unlike the holiday we celebrate, the reason for Christmas exists 24/7/365. We only wake up to presents from Santa one morning a year. We wake up to the blessing of Christ's birth every morning. Even though I collect nativity sets, sing Christmas carols, and read the 2nd chapter of Luke on Christmas Eve, if I don't take time to share the miraculous birth of Christ, I'm not sharing the real Christmas.
My favorite source for the story of Christ's birth is Luke 2 in the King James Version. I guess it's because it's the version I memorized as a child. It's also the version quoted by Linus in A Charlie Brown Christmas. So, as we move through the 149 days left until Christmas morning, let's try to pause in the midst of our preparations and remember why we celebrate Christmas.
The Christmas Story - Luke 2 (King James Version)
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Christmas in July: Talk About Organized!
I have developed my stress-free holiday plan over many, many years. It works for me. I share it with others as a tool to provide them with a stress-free or at least, less stressful Christmas. But, if you want to be really hardcore organized for the holidays, check out Organized Christmas. They have it all when it comes to lists, calendars, plans, suggestions, budgets, gifts, anything having to do with holiday organization. And it's free!
I printed out some of their lists, charts, and calendar pages after Christmas last year. I'm trying to figure out if I can incorporate some of their ideas into my plan so that my plan works more efficiently. And I've got to be honest here. I love lists. I love to make lists. I love to check items off of lists. I like to make lists of lists that I should make in the future to help me make better lists. Well, I'm not quite THAT bad. But I'm probably close!
So check out Organized Christmas website. Don't get overwhelmed. I visited the site several times before I chose the tools that would work for me. Let me know if you print any of their materials and how they work for you as we transition into having a stress-free holiday!

Christmas in July: Cookbooks
Somehow I began collecting Christmas cookbooks a few years ago. I really enjoy the Gooseberry Patch cookbooks. Besides having some good recipes, they have memories, traditions, stories, and decorating tips contributed by their readers. Here's a photo of my Christmas cookbooks. It's hard to see in this picture, but the paper sticking out of the top of some of the books denote recipes I want to try. Looks like I need to get busy!

Christmas in July: Food
Wow, just a few days left in Christmas in July! I don't know about you, but I have really enjoyed reading what other bloggers have been posting this month. Today I'm going back into the kitchen. I've heard this recipe called by many names, but I discovered it as Christmas Eve Shortcut Cinnamon Buns through Flylady.
I don't make them every year, but when I do they are gone in a flash. This is a very easy make-ahead recipe. And they fill the house with a scrumptious fragrance while baking!

Christmas in July: Children's Books
One of the joys of having grandchildren is reading Christmas stories with them. Today I want to share a few of our favorites with you.
This is the oldest book in our children's collection.
I've had this book since I was a little girl. It has some great stories and poems.
Olivia! Who doesn't love Olivia stories?!
In 1985 Current, Inc. began publishing the "A Story a Day 'Til Christmas series.
We would read these stories and poems to our kids every night at dinner during the holiday season.
Corduroy is one of our favorite characters. We just had to have his Christmas book.
Little Golden Book stories are timeless. I remember them from when I was a kid and from when my own kids were small.
These books were new to us last year. They tell the delightful story of what snowmen do when we're not looking!
Carl is a family favorite and has been since my kids were young.
The Gift of the Magi is a timeless tale. This version is written at a child's level of understanding.

Christmas in July: Organize
Today I worked on wrapping the ornaments I purchased at Hallmark last weekend. I also organized the bags I will use for the stocking stuffers I buy. I thought I'd take a photo to show you my limited progress on Christmas shopping. I have 13 people in my immediate family to buy for; I'm totally finished with one person. Of course, I haven't received lists from about half of them, so I can't shop for them yet. I have purchased at least one gift for each of the 13.
Today I transferred the wrapped gifts into a bigger tub and placed it in the office closet. I set up my stocking stuffer bags in the closet too. I use them to put the stocking gifts into until I get the stockings out to hang later this year. I don't fill the stockings until the night before we're going to open gifts. Even though they're all grown up, I can't trust them not to peek!
I'm on my way to a stress-free Christmas...

Christmas in July: Vintage
Did you see the banner? Only 160 days until Christmas! Time is speeding by. I really enjoy the vintage style Christmas decor. Ornaments, cards, decor... the vintage style always catches my eye. Today I thought I'd share a few vintage Christmas images with you. They project a cozy, serene, joyful, happy Christmas. I feel calmer just looking at them!
I found these images through a search on Google and from Pinterest.

Christmas in July: Traditions
We don't have traditions in the sense that you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO DO THE SAME THING AT THE SAME TIME EVERY YEAR. But we do have some long-standing traditions that we try to keep each Christmas.
1. Exterior Christmas Lights - I grew up in Overland Park, KS which is a suburb of Kansas City. Each year the Plaza shopping district would have their Christmas Lighting Ceremony on Thanksgiving night. (I don't know if that's how they still do it). When my husband and I first got married, I told him I'd like to have our exterior lights turned on each year on Thanksgiving night. That was ok with him and... a tradition was born!
2. Christmas Stockings - As I've stated before, I really like to see all the stockings "hung by the chimney with care" whether we have a fireplace or not! I enjoy filling the stockings and try to come up with something different each year.
3. Goodies - There are a few goodies that I bake every year without fail. I always make Peanut Clusters, Red/Green M&M cookies, quick breads, sugar cookies, and Snickerdoodles (with colored sugars). Yummy!
4. Movies - Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without our favorite movies. Even though I've seen Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, The Family Stone, and White Christmas so many times that I can recite the entire script, I just have to watch them again. And again. And again.
5. Music - I enjoy Christmas music even more than the movies. I listen to it year around (but it's turned down low so the neighbors don't think I'm odd). From November 1st til December 31st it's turned up loud. And I sing along!
6. Organization - This may seem like a strange word to use as a tradition. But this is the most important tradition to me. It's the one that frees me up to enjoy all the elements of the holiday season. For the past 15+ years I have been totally ready for Christmas by Thanksgiving Day. That means all of the gifts bought and wrapped. The Christmas letter written. The Christmas cards signed and addressed. I decorate the interior of our home on the day after Thanksgiving, or even sooner if Thanksgiving is not at my house that year. I bake and freeze the quick breads the week before Thanksgiving and I bake the cookies Thanksgiving weekend. Then, I'm done. I'm free to go drive around and look at lights. To attend community holiday events. To invite friends and family over. To have fun.
How about you? Do you have traditions that you participate in each year? Please leave a comment with your traditions and I'll do a follow up post on traditions as we celebrate Christmas in July.

Christmas in July: Goodies
Just sharing this recipe makes me want to go into the kitchen and make it! I found this recipe three years ago. It is delicious, very moist, and a crowd-pleaser! It can be served as a breakfast food, for brunch, or as a goodie along with cookies and candies. As always, if you make it, please let me know how you liked it.

Christmas in July: Hallmark Ornaments
Today is a day I've looked forward to for months. It's Hallmark Ornament Premiere Weekend! Jessica and I arrived at the Hallmark store bright and early. We were among the first 50 customers, so we received a free gift. I picked up the ornaments I had pre-ordered and we oohed and aahed over some other merchandise.
After that we headed to Target to kill some time until Hobby Lobby and Joann's opened. At Hobby Lobby, we oohed and aahed again over the Christmas decor. I have got to go back next week with coupons in hand to purchase some ornaments that will be just right for my silver tree.
I can't show all of the ornaments I bought at Hallmark because most of them are gifts. So, I'll share the ones for my home now. I go back September 8 to pick up a limited ornament, and then in October to pick up the rest of my ornaments. I am so in the Christmas mood today!

Christmas in July: Nativity
I am a serious collector of Nativity sets. My mom started collecting them, and I always admired her collection. Then it occurred to me one year that I could collect them too! I started my collection about 10 years ago. I don't know how many I have. As I was uploading the photos into this post I realized this is a good opportunity for me to count them. I try to add at least one set each year. But I don't buy a set just to buy one. In order to come home with me it has to be different from what I already own, the faces have to be perfect, it has to be something I would be willing to display year around.
Actually one year I did display a cabinet full of nativities for the entire year. I enjoyed looking at them, but the best part was the reaction of visitors to my home. Since then, I leave out at least one for the entire year. Here is my collection:

I purchased this one at Michael's last year. Jessica and I were in the store and even though I'd never seen them sell Nativity sets before I asked a sales person if they had any this year. She said "what's a Nativity?" I said "you know, a manger set". She said "what is that?" I said "you know, a display that shows the manger where Jesus was born." She said "I don't know what you mean". Oh my goodness gracious. The manager walked by, so I asked him. Thankfully, he knew what a Nativity was. Michael's was selling two styles last year. I asked him why they hadn't sold them the past several years and he replied that no one wants to buy them. He explained that how well these sets sold would determine if they would stock them again in 2012. I bought one and Jessica bought one. I hope it helped!
I bought this musical snow globe at Kohl's many years ago.
This set was purchased from Current, Inc.
I collect thimbles. This thimble Nativity was sold by Hallmark over 20 years ago.
I bought these plaques at Kirkland's.
This is a 2011 purchase from Home Goods.
My photo does not do this set justice.
The colors and details are beautiful.
It came from Hobby Lobby.
This musical snow window came from Price Club (Costco now)
Hallmark
This is the tallest set I own, one of my favorites.
Dan really liked this one. Their faces were ok, so I bought it!
I bought these pieces at a local church bookstore.
I have since seen the rest of the figures, and they are gorgeous!
They are also completely out of my budget...
This set came from Joann's. It sets in the office.
This musical set came from Kohl's.
This set was a gift, another one of my favorites.
I bought this at Hobby Lobby three years ago.
It is so lovely and delicate... and extremely heavy!
Dan's mom stitched this for us in 1990.
More Peanuts Gang from Hallmark.
I bought this set from Current, Inc. over 20 years ago.
This is our first Nativity. Dan painted it. It is the most special one I own.
This Nativity music box came from Home Goods.
I stitched this little Nativity in the 90's.
This set is illuminated by changing colors.
This Nativity candle holder is flimsy and delicate.
But I think it is just beautiful and it is one of my favorites.
Well, there you have it. Now that I've shown them all, I guess I should count them. Looks like I have 24 Nativity sets in my collection. Wonder how many I'll have when I go to pack them away on December 26, 2012?!

Christmas in July: Decor
I change my Christmas decor around every year. The only constant in my decor is that every room in my home has at least one nativity. The truth is that every room has more than one since I collect nativity sets. I don't place them in the same way each year though. My house is very small and I can't even put out all of my decor. I collect a Christmas village and it has remained in storage the past two years and will again this year unless we're in a new home.
Lately I'm getting more interested in making my own decor instead of buying it ready made at the store. I generally like a vintage look, but don't keep to that exclusively. As always, I'd love to hear how you decorate your home for the holidays. I'm always on the lookout for fresh ideas! Here's some of my decor choices from last Christmas.

I decorate it for each holiday and season of the year.
Dan's office is decorated with themes specific to him.
He painted the Santa on the polar bear.
I bought these years ago from one of those catalogs passed around work.
They fit perfectly in the office.
I filled glass canisters with ornaments and lights - pretty!
A friend gave me the wire angel years ago.
I wish it showed up better. It is one of my favorite items.
The round pieces were stitched by me.
The framed piece was purchased at Ross.
With no fireplace, I have to be creative with the stockings.
Jessica made the wreath with the books.
The framed pieces were purchased at Ross.
Dan's sister made the Santa face almost 30 years ago.
