CIJ: The ABCs of Christmas ~ Birth of Christ

(Thank you to everyone who has left a comment recently. I just discovered yesterday that there's a problem with Blogger and that's why I haven't been getting notification of comments. I appreciate your visits and your comments!)

The birth of Christ Jesus . . .

Luke 2 KJV
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Christmas in July: Day Thirty - Christ is Born!

It's fun to talk about Santa, Snowmen, gifts, crafts, goodies, gift wrap, decor, family celebrations, but Christmas is ultimately about the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Over the years I've shared Linus explaining the true meaning of Christmas, various YouTube performances highlighting the birth of Christ, the actual text from the Bible proclaiming His Birth. They're all special to me.

This year I'm repeating one of my favorites. The Hallelujah Chorus performed as a flash mob at a mall in 2010. Enjoy!

Christmas in July: The Reason

Wow, Christmas in July has been fun! I've enjoyed reading the posts of the other CIJ bloggers out there. I feel inspired and creative as we head toward the Christmas season. I can't let this series end without sharing the story of the origin of Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ.

Thanks for visiting - see you soon!

Christmas in July: Christ is Born

I saved the best post for last in this Christmas in July series. The post that honors the reason we even have Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. That seems to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the season. It seems to be something to be embarrassed about in some circles. Is it the truth. Christ was born, and although He probably wasn't born exactly on December 25th, that is the day that we observe as His birthday.

Anybody that has seen "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is familiar with the scene where Linus explains the meaning of Christmas. It touches me every time I see it, even though it's been decades since I first saw the special on TV when I was a kid. In third grad I memorized Luke 2 in Sunday School. It has always stayed with me (King James Version). I can repeat it today almost as good as I could back then.

So for my final Christmas in July post, I want to leave you with those words from Luke 2. I am using the NET version for this post. Thank you for sharing Christmas in July with me. I'm amazed that I managed to post each of the 31 days in July. It was fun, and I hope you enjoyed it too. Now as we move through the final 147 days until Christmas, I hope you will find time to reflect on Christ's birth, the reason we celebrate.

Luke 2 (NET)
Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus to register all the empire for taxes. This was the first registration, taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone went to his own town to be registered. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David. He went to be registered with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him, and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the tine came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Now there were shepherds nearby living out in the field, keeping guard over their flock at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were absolutely terrified. But the angel said to them "Do not be afraid! Listen carefully, for I proclaim to you good news that brings great joy to all the people; Today your Savior is born in the city of David. He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger." Suddenly a vast, heavenly army appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among people with whom he is pleased!"
When the angels left them and went back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, that the Lord has made known to us." So they hurried off and located Mary and Joseph, and found the baby lying in a manger. When they saw him, they related what they had been told about this child, and all who heard it were astonished at what the shepherds said. But Mary treasured up all these words, pondering in her heart what they might mean. So the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen; everything was just as they had been told.

The Christmas Story

Luke 2 (NIV)
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.
